We Offer General Dentistry in Plantation FL and Screenings for Oral Cancer
Early Detection Can Save Lives.
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and Westside Dental Center is a General Dentistry in Plantation FL office providing VELscope®Technologyoral cancer screenings. Oral cancer is a disease that is not as rare as you may think. Approximately 43,250 people are diagnosed every year in the US. Oral Cancer kills 1 person every hour, every day. Over 115 new people will be diagnosed each day. The good news is our Plantation dentist can help with early detection with a simple, quick and painless screening.
Who Should Have a Screening?
All adults. If caught early, oral cancer survival rates are very high and any side effects from treatment are very low. VELscope®has changed the way oral screenings of the mouth and tongue take place. The examinations detect abnormal tissue changes in the mouth. Healthy tissues will have a distinctly different visible pattern than abnormal tissues, like infections from fungal, viral or bacteria, and neoplastic lesions. Our Plantation dentist usesVELscope®Technology screeningsthat can be done during a routine dental office visit and take only a few minutes.
What Are The Risk Factors For Oral Cancer?
There are two leading causes to oral cancer; the first is from the use of alcohol and tobacco, the second is from exposure to HPV16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16). HPV16 virus is now the leading cause of all oral cancers in America; this is the same virus that causes a majority of cervical cancers in women. Healthy, young, non-smokers are now the fasted growing demographic segment in the population to be at risk for oral cancer because of the HPV16 virus.
Are There Early Warning Signs?
Yes. If you experience red and/or white discolored soft tissue inside the mouth or on the tongue, you should get a screening. If you have sores that take longer than 2 weeks to heal or you notice your voice has gone hoarse and it has remained hoarse and rough for a long period of time, a screening is recommended.
Other indicators are:
- Feeling like there is something stuck in your throat.
- Numbness in or around your mouth.
- Difficulty moving your tongue or jaw.
- Problems swallowing.
- Ear pain that persists on one side only.
- If a sore under a denture does not go away or heal, even after adjustment.
- A thickening or lump(s) that develop in the mouth or on the neck.
We here at Westside Dental Center advise patients to get an oral cancer screening every year. Call us and find out how quick and painless it is for your screening when you see us for General Dentistry in Plantation FL.
