Do you avoid smiling for pictures due to crooked and overlapping teeth? Are you looking for an alternative to traditional metal braces? If you answered yes to either of those questions, you may enjoy the benefits that come from straightening your smile with Invisalign at Westside Dental Center.
Invisalign is an almost invisible solution to your teeth crowding and spacing problems. By using a series of clear, removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth just like braces but without all the bands or wires. In fact, almost no one will know you’re wearing it! By changing them every few weeks, your teeth will slowly shift toward the perfect smile you’ve always wanted.
Although straightening your smile can dramatically enhance your overall aesthetics, it can also protect your long-term oral health. When teeth overlap, they can trap food and bacteria in hard to reach places, increasing your risk for developing tooth decay and gum disease. This can lead to tooth-colored fillings, dental crowns, and other costly restorative treatments. Gum disease can also increase your chances for developing serious health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.
What is Invisalign?
This orthodontic treatment, also referred to as clear braces, provides a series of virtually invisible aligner trays to correct your smile. Made of smooth, BPA-free clear plastic, these comfortable trays are customized to discreetly fit over your teeth to gently realign them into proper placement. With Invisalign, you never have to worry about developing mouth sores from sharp, extruding metal edges that often happen with traditional braces.
Because the trays are removable, you can still enjoy your favorite foods and beverages without fear of damaging your orthodontics. Removing the trays also allows you to thoroughly clean them each night and brush and floss your teeth more effectively.

How Does Invisalign Work?
During your consultation, Dr. Dham will perform digital x-rays to get a better understanding of how to personalize your Invisalign treatment plan. This will also allow her to detect any tooth decay or gum disease so she can first address those with the proper treatment. Starting with a healthy smile will ensure your Invisalign treatment is more successful.
To design your customized trays, she will use digital imaging technology to create a precise 3-D image of your smile for the Invisalign lab technicians to use in configuring your aligner trays. The trays generally take about three to four weeks to design. Once prepared, Dr. Dham will check the fit of your first aligner tray during your follow-up appointment.
In order to achieve desired results, each tray should be worn for at least 22 hours a day for approximately two weeks until graduating to the next aligner in the series. This type of orthodontic treatment requires a level of discipline on the patient’s part to keep track of the trays and timeline. The amount of trays required will depend on the severity of your misalignment and complexity of your treatment plan. Dr. Dham will send you home with a few trays at a time, scheduling follow-up appointments every six to eight weeks to supply you with the next set.
Invisalign vs. Braces
Both traditional braces and Invisalign accomplish the same end goal – a straighter, healthier, and more attractive smile. They each provide a unique set of treatment goals to do so.
Traditional braces consist of metal brackets, made from titanium or high quality stainless steel, bonded to the front of each tooth with a strong adhesive. The brackets are connected with arch wires and ligature elastics, designed to apply gradual pressure to gently guide teeth into proper position. The downside to braces is they can be uncomfortable and noticeable, especially for adult patients looking for a discreet solution to straightening their smile.
Invisalign is designed to be virtually invisible, so as not to detract from your face. Adult patients find this extremely beneficial when interacting at the office or in important social situations. With Invisalign, you will spend less time at the dentist’s office and treatment can generally be completed in less than a year. Treatment for metal braces typically requires at least two years and office visits every two to three weeks, costing you more time and money in the long run.
