If you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile, porcelain veneers may be the answer. These thin porcelain shells can be customized to fit seamlessly over the front of your teeth, to create a perfectly aligned, yet natural looking and stunning smile. Veneers are ideal for patients whose teeth are stained or disproportionate, crooked, misshapen, gapped, or chipped.
Made to blend flawlessly with your natural teeth, this popular cosmetic dentistry treatment is often combined with teeth whitening, and sometimes dental crowns, at Westside Dental Center. Porcelain veneers will not only dramatically improve your appearance, but can boost your self-confidence, which can affect relationships, quality of life, and employment.
What Are Dental Veneers?
Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers or laminates, will match the natural look of your teeth, but improve your smile by hiding flaws and improving whiteness. Having your treatment performed by an experienced cosmetic dentist like Dr. Dham will ensure that your veneers do not appear too large, bulky, or unnatural. Because veneers can conceal a number of cosmetic blemishes, many of our patients instantly achieve the same results that were possible with multiple procedures, such as Invisalign® and teeth whitening.
Durability of Veneers
With proper care, dental veneers can last 10 to 20 years. Caring for them is much like caring for your natural teeth. To extend the longevity, we encourage patients to diligently follow a good oral hygiene regimen and visit the dentist every six months for routine exams and cleanings. Although porcelain veneers are durable and stain-resistant, it is very rare, but possible for them to break or dislodge, especially if you have a bad habit of chomping on hard candies and ice, or biting your nails. If this happens, be sure to keep the broken piece and schedule a visit with Dr. Dham immediately.
Cost of Dental Veneers
Veneers are individually priced, so the cost will vary depending on how many teeth you want treated, the type of veneer chosen, and the experience of your dentist. During your consultation, Dr. Dham will present all the options available so you can budget accordingly. Financing may also be available.
The Dental Veneer Procedure
The dental veneer procedure generally takes about two office visits. During your initial consultation, Dr. Dham will provide a thorough examination with x-rays and schedule treatment to address tooth decay or gum disease. At the first clinical visit for your veneers procedure, the dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from the teeth receiving veneers so the thin porcelain shells will fit snugly. She will then take an impression of your bite so that our lab can fabricate your customized veneers for the best fit possible.
Once the veneers are created, Dr. Dham will make sure the veneers fit properly during a follow-up appointment. If no adjustments are required, she will apply a special roughening solution over your teeth so that the bonding agent strongly adheres with the veneers and each tooth.
Pros and Cons
The benefits of porcelain veneers are numerous:
- No recovery time required
- Durable, natural-looking results
- Conceal a variety of cosmetic flaws
- Increase self-confidence and better quality of life
Although minimal, cons include:
- Typically not covered by insurance
- Have to be replaced every 15 years
- Risk of tooth sensitivity
- Irreversible treatment
Veneers vs. Dental Crowns and Composite Bonding
When concealing cosmetic dental flaws, there are a variety of treatments available, including veneers, dental crowns, and dental bonding. Veneers can be made with ceramic and lithium disilicate and provide a durable solution to enhancing the appearance of your smile. Dental bonding uses composite resin tinted to match the natural look of your tooth to conceal flawed teeth. Although more cost-effective than veneers, dental bonding is not as long-lasting.
A dental crown uses a thicker and more durable form of ceramic and can cover blemishes, as well as repair broken or decayed teeth to restore structural integrity. Dental crowns provide a better option for capping molars that have a higher biting force.
